Fred Vigeant was born and grew up in Connecticut. He graduated from Clarkson College of Technology in 1969, where he had been a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC).
He went on active duty in April 1970 and was sent to Chu Lai, Republic of Viet Nam in January 1971, as a member of the 23rd (AMERICAL) Infantry Division. He served as Information Officer of the Americal Division Artillery. Among his subsequent additional assignments were civic action officer and recreation officer.
He was responsible for photographing and issuing press releases on soldier promotions, education, medals and other notable achievements within his unit. He additionally had the opportunity to photograph community efforts, including the Medical Civic Action Program ( MEDCAPS) and support efforts at local orphanages.
He returned to the United States in November, 1971, with the stand down of the division and got on with his life.
